They are the largest medical air unit in Idaho, Washington and Oregon.  They have 11 other bases in the Pacific & Inland Northwest and has a combined fleet of 11 medical helicopters, 5 fixed winged aircraft and 4 ground ambulances.

This is fantastic news for the Sandpoint area for 2 reasons… first,   it will bring 14-15 new jobs to the area and second, it will save lives and have a higher success rate of rescue.

The Best of the Road sponsored by Rand McNally and USA Today started by taking votes from across the country from readers and followers to see who should be in the final competition.

Sandpoint, Idaho made the top 6 to be included in the 3 week long tour across the country.  Read more about the selection and competition in the USA Today Travel section.

With Baker City, Oregon- Coral Gables, Florida – Franklin, Tennessee – Marco Island, Florida – &  Pacifica, California as the competition it was a tough field.  Sandpoint, Idaho took home the big prize for a multitude of reasons.

The first reason in my oppinion is, the town didn’t “fuss” over the judges.  They were given a number of adventures, locations, eateries and tour suggestions and let the judges, The McNavigators, make their own choices to their liking. That’s pretty much how it is here year round, no matter who you are.  It’s like going to your friends home and having them tell you to “make yourself at home”.

Second, the town and the surrounding beauty spoke for itself.

Third, the people.

In Sandpoint, the natural beauty isn’t the only draw.  It is the amazing people, from all backgrounds and places in the world.  The artists, musicians, business owners, tourists, Canadians, part-timers and full-timers. Everyone comes here for a little piece of their own “private Idaho” and that is what they get.

2011 is the year of “Doo Wop” with Joey Dee, famous for Peppermint Twist, headlining the two party nights, Friday and Saturday. Thursday starts the music rolling with Rock n Roll Heaven VII at the Historic Panida Theatre. Friday at 5:00pm the streets in Downtown are transformed into a 50′s Hot Rod cruise with flames and all! This has become quite a parade that lasts for 2 hours with some of the coolest cars you’ve ever seen. And on occasion there are some interesting characters directing traffic…

On Saturday traffic on Highway 95 (connection between North Idaho and Canada) is completely re-directed so that the whole downtown Sandpoint area is transformed into a parking “museum” for spectators, enthusiast or the possible buyer can spend the day enjoying the cars and talking to the owners, many of whom have 10′s of 1,000′s of dollars into these vehicles.

So come out and enjoy the weekend and get a big taste of small town U.S.A. 1950′s style in Sandpoint Idaho.
